Homeland
My neighbor has a map
of his country
painted on the wall.
It reminds him of everything.
It reminds him of the olive groves
and his long dreams
in their shade.
It reminds him of the manuscripts
he lost
while fleeing on a donkey wagon
at dawn.
It reminds him of all the funerals
he has attended.
It reminds him of his oath
to return one day
and die in its grave.
